You’re broadcasting some pretty juicy stuff about yourself without even saying a word. Not even your co-workers are (necessarily) giving you away. It seems every cubicle, every office, every desk has a story to tell, and it’s pretty much a profile of you. So what sort of details are you inadvertedly sharing with everyone?
Are you announcing that you’re an extrovert? A bowl of candy or fruit, or anything that basically says, “Come into my space…” shows that you are open for interaction. Introverts send out no such signals because social interaction is pretty much the last thing they want in the workplace.
Are you a family man or woman? This one’s an obvious one. If your Office Desk (Aff) is covered with pictures of your loved ones, you’re proud of your family and don’t want them far from your sight even when you’re at the office.
Are you a git ‘er doner? The post it notes or index cards give you away. You also have a Calendar (Aff) close by at all times, and it is covered in writing. (I guess the more you’re gittin’ done, the more you’re writin’ down.)
Are you perfectly content? The plant on your desk says you are. People who have plants in their offices are very comfortable where they are and entertain no thoughts of leaving.
Are you not as content as the green thumbs? If you have sparse decorations, empty drawers and not one personal item, you’re pretty much waiting for the next ship to sail. That, or you’re a minimalist of the highest order.
Finally, the most obvious way we tell the world about ourselves, or more specifically about our personalities, is with the individual decorations, wall hangings and figurines we have in our office. These extras provide the final chapter of the story, and probably the most telling.
