Okay, this guy qualifies for “most unusual.” Check out this fun little alarm clock. It’s the The Start Your Engines Alarm Clock
and I’m pretty sure that people who normally sleep through alarm clocks have met their match.
The Start Your Engines alarm clock awakens you with the sound of a high-powered V8 engine increasing its revolutions per minute as it cycles through four gears to top speed. Sounds like me at a stop light. Such a sweet rush comes from being first out of the gate.
A tachometer surrounding the digital time window displays a needle that moves as the rpm increase to its redline of 6 000 rpm. The engine sound will grow in pitch and intensity until you press the snooze button. Press… slam… tomato…tomatoe….
A headlight button allows you to illuminate the time and tachometer display for easy viewing at night; backlight turns off after 10 seconds. Also includes an AM/FM radio.

So, yeah, college basketball is pretty much always on our mind. During the first season of the year (#1 if you were paying attention), our stores and malls are covered with blue-clad fanatics. The first thing I ever got from Useful Things was the Posy Desktop Photo/Memo Holder you see pictured above. When I saw its price ($12.95), I kind of thought, “Uh oh, this is going to be a hot little mess,” but I was delighted to see that it’s not only very well made, it’s a knock out!
It’s perfect for showcasing pictures of loved ones, whether they’re sweethearts, kids, pets, or yourself. Whoever motivates you, inspires you, and makes you smile. My favorite use for mine is this: I like to put my most important To Do tasks on an index card – ones that are more like Gotta Dos than To Dos – and then I stick the index card into one of the slots.

I thought this was beyond interesting. One of my favorite companies, Staples, conducted a survey recently that led to the following revelations:
- 47 percent of respondents felt their stress level diminish after the simple act of shredding.
- 85 percent of the people felt smarter.
- 83 percent felt more organized.
- 80 percent felt more in control of their lives.
- 92 percent felt safer after shredding.
- 42 percent felt calmer.
- 86 percent loved the fact that shredding allowed them to rid themselves of clutter.
- Nearly half of the participants said that shredding helped them maintain a balanced life.
Maybe we’re onto something here! Could the innocent-looking Royal KS7 7-sheet Cross-cut Shredder
pictured above could put therapists and spa owners out of work?
“Staples’ consumer survey confirms what we have found in our research,” said Consumer Psychologist Richard Feinberg of Purdue University. “Consumers use products like a shredder for utilitarian purposes but then these products have very significant and positive emotional and psychological impacts. These psychological impacts may not even be known by the consumer, but they can unconsciously improve their life. In a world where people are time deprived, increasingly stressed, and feeling more and more out of control, shredding may provide positive psychological fuel.”
I wonder if the feelings of euphoria that come with paper shredding are similar to the joy ride my cat gets when she shreds the daylights out of her scratching post. In all seriousness, there must be something therapeutic about it.
I don’t know if it’s therapeutic or not, but I challenge you to say this post’s title 4 times fast. Just be sure no one else is around – it won’t be your finest hour.
