For the Home Office Run by a Cat

Adorable cat in a Cat Bed for Desks

The Refined Feline Kitt-in Box Cat Bed in Cherry

If, like me, you work from home with your cat (don’t even try telling them they aren’t part of head of the operation), you’ll love this cat bed for desks.  In the picture above, an Amazon user shares a picture of their BEAUTIFUL baby (Gypsy).  Like Gypsy, my indoor cat Alexa works full time overseeing my online (and offline for that matter) production.  Bless her, it’s just 7 am as I’m typing this and she’s already on duty – with one eye on me and one on the birds outside the window.  She can’t figure out which is more fascinating – birds and squirrels jockeying for position at bird feeders or her caffeine-fueled human trying to function while waiting  for the coffee pot to get through….

Awww, it’s ready.  Be right back.

Strong pot. Life’s good.

When Alexa’s feeling feisty, she likes to swat at my fingers as they dance all over the keyboard, or she’ll try to “catch” the words as they spill out across the screen. My human mind thinks, “Oh, how precious, my kitty cat’s playing..” while her superior mind no doubt thinks, “Get rid of this exclamation point.. change great to wonderful (why does the coffee pit use the word great so often?)… does she seriously think you spell it like that.. What’s THAT supposed to even mean…”

It’s probably great that I can’t hear what my editor’s really thinking.

The only problem about my furry little co-worker and her love for being near me as I work is that… well…. she’s not the thinnest of cats.  When she sits on the desk, the desk all but fails to exist.  The The Refined Feline Kitt-in Box Cat Bed in Cherry could allow my chubby baby to stay right beside me, while allowing me to also use the desk. See the desk.

Product Features

  • Clamps securely to desktop; felt pads resist scratching
  • Supports 20lbs including cats and small dogs
  • Comfortable foam cushion with machine washable cover
  • Constructed in solid pine
  • Adjusts to multiple positions

The Kitt-In Box is a cat bed, which can attach to the side of a desk or be placed on top it, has felt pads to protect the desk top. Cats are drawn to the soft cushion bed and the high walls, which provide the perfect place to curl up and sleep on the job. The special desk bed holds up to 20 pound cats and even small dogs. I love that it allows pets to stay within reach of a head scratch and plenty of ooooooh-ing and ahhhhhing. Pampered pets are fueled by the oohs and ahhs like I am coffee.  Speaking of which, it’s time for cup number two.

Rolling Laptop Assistant

For the Home Office That Doesn't Like to Sit Still

by Joi

Anyone with a home office knows how deceptive the phrase truly is. It implies that there’s one special room – usually in the back of the house – with a big brown door. You open the door and voila! there’s a big, beautiful home office with rich mahogany furniture, bookshelves filled to the brim with knowledge, computers, laptops, plants, and every office supply known to exist. The room would look like something out of a Staples or Office Depot catalog and would be enough to make an office freak pass out from excitement.

My knees are getting weak as it is.

However, if we’re to be honest – few home offices are quite as picture perfect. Oh, don’t get me wrong, we all love our home offices and most of us who work from home wouldn’t trade what we do for anything. Just don’t look for our work areas in Staples or Office Depot catalogs.

Most of us can attest to the fact that when you work from home… your home is your office. You simply move what you’re working on from one room to the other. Laptops and Notebooks have helped home offices thrive. We can transport whatever it is we’re working on to whatever room we want to be in at the time. If a favorite show on the Food Network is on or my UK Wildcats or St. Louis Cardinals are on TV, it’s definitely time to roll.

Like any of them can get their game on without me.

The Rolling LapTop Assistant, pictured above, makes rolls like this easier.  A home office HAS to be flexible and this laptop cart makes it all possible… beautifully.

From Home Office Solutions:

The Rolling Laptop Assistant is your solution to a more comfortable and productive home office. The two cherry veneer surface tops are independently adjustable to fit to your liking. The Rolling Laptop Assistant provides convenient laptop work space while sitting in a sofa, lounger, or even in bed. Steel adjustable base and locking casters.

  • Adjustable height and angle
  • Locking casters
  • Beautiful cherry veneer

Whether you have a home office or not, this laptop assistant can make life a lot easier.  See Rolling LapTop Assistant for more information.

Working Out in the Home Office

Staying Fit at Home or the Office

by Joi

I’ve noticed something pretty alarming… pretty depressing… and pretty much worthy of a Charlie Brown groan, “GOOD GRIEF.”

Sitting at a computer between 4 and 6 hours a day doesn’t burn a heck of a lot of calories.  Before we started our web publishing business, I was more active than I’m able to be now.  Quite the busy bee, I chased my kids, toted them to and from everyplace from McDonald’s to the library, we rode bikes, did yard work, etc.

Calories in, calories out. No problem.

Fast forward to a more sedentary lifestyle and Joi’s calories come in and have no immediate plans for departure.  They like it at the resort and see no reason to go anywhere else.

Sigh.

We bought a treadmill and that has been a lifesaver (you can click the link to read my review on Self Help Daily).  Seriously, I love, love, love, love my treadmill.

We can, with all good intentions, tell ourselves, “I’ll start doing cardio or Pilates tomorrow…”  but tomorrow comes and we never quite get around to hitting the mat.  Starbucks, we hit hard – but the mat, not so much.  Exercise equipment is a constant reminder to GET BUSY. It sits there, giving you a cold, icy stare as though it KNOWS how much chocolate you’ve consumed in the past 24 hours.

I can say from experience that having exercise equipment is the KEY.  If you get a mobile piece of exercise equipment (or accessories), you can take them essentially anywhere you want to workout at the time.

If you get a huge, mobile piece of equipment, be sure you’re incredibly smart about where you set it up. I set my treadmill up in our bedroom, where I can close the door when I’m working out.  No need for everyone to see me getting all kinds of sweaty or glancing Heavenward for Divine intervention.  I have it set up where I can watch television while I chug.  My favorite routine is to pop an episode into the dvd player of a favorite show (I Love Lucy, Golden Girls, House, Friends, The Flintstones…).  Laughter drowns out my gasps as I make the incline climb.   The gasps creep my cat out, the laughter she understands.

Within this post are other exercise accessories and machines that you may find useful in your home, office, or home office.  Click through any image or link to learn more about each.

If you need me, Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, Sophia, and Alexa and I will be in the back of the house.  Knock loudly.

BODYBUGG (version 3) calorie management system: CHROME Frame

If your automobile, or even a hotel, frequently serves as your office, the Auto Express File Master by Go Office is jut the organizer you need.  I work exclusively from home but even I want one.

In the evening, while my husband and I are watching sports, Survivor, The Biggest Loser, or some other can’t miss event on tv, I often carry a few notebooks, index cards,  books, pens, to do lists, etc. from my desk into the den.  I think most of us who work at home often turn our home office into a mobile office – sometimes even all the way to Panera Bread or Starbucks.

We’re such movers and shakers.

Mobility would be much easier, tidier, efficient, and professional with an organizational system such as the Auto Express File Master by Go Office.

Features and Description

The Auto Exec File Master is reinventing the way you work from the car. This compact work space is lightweight and easy to use. With capacity for 50 or more hanging files, this desk is a must-have for mobile workers who need a great deal of filing space to keep papers organized and efficient. A special opening in the top of the desk creates a second storage area for hanging file folders. The file folders face the driver which makes it easier to see and access.

The remaining top surface of the desk is covered with the rubber non-skid material – this ensures that a laptop, briefcase, PDA, or cell phone will keep from sliding while the vehicle is in motion. The large storage area is great for office tools and accessories and also for keeping a laptop hidden out-of-sight. Additional storage compartments hold small supplies such as pens, maps, etc.

This desk model is ideal for those needing quick access to files and mobile equipment and at the same time needing work space to write.

Features:
• Compact design for space saving
• Non-slip writing surface
• Holds 50 or more hanging files
• Files face driver for easy access
• Large storage compartment fits laptops
• Several compartments for supplies

Size: 10 1/2″tall x 25″wide x 17″deep

• This product ships directly from the manufacturer

For more information on this mobile office organizer as well as a ton of other office organization products (for your office, home office, or mobile office), see Auto Express File Master by Go Office.

Cool. Way, way cool. In the video below, brilliant home decorating expert Kelly Edwards shows how you can basically build a home office in a box.

Anyone who works from home, as I do, knows the challenge of trying to keep your home office looking more like a home and less like an office. I try very hard to keep my books, folders, notebooks, office supplies, and so on kind of on the low. We have nice-looking shelves, cool organizers, and so on, but this office in a chest is simply beyond anything I’ve ever even dreamed of.

Check it out – I know you’ll be as impressed as I am.

We have a standing family tradition in our family on Sundays – my husband can have first crack at every inch of the Sunday paper except for the circulars.  Our oldest daughter and I call dibs on that prime real estate.  We always wrestle over the same circulars, too…. the Target, Kohl’s, and JC Penney circulars.  My husband swears he can hear cash register bells as we turn each page.

Target’s circular included, as always, a lot of mind-blowing “Must Haves.”  A few things stood out – LOTS of things my kitchen is calling out for (KitchenAid, dishes, crockpots, glasses…)  and some really big deals on office furniture.

  • Home Office Executive Chairs in PurSoft faux leather for just $99 each.  The Airseat office chair is also on sale.
  • Home Anywhere Desk in Ebony is on sale for $75.
  • 3-Shelf Bookcase, also in Ebony, is just $75.
  • Home bookcases (5 shelf) in Ebony, Espresso, or Cherry are just $95.
  • Home bookcases (2 shelf) in Ebony, Espresso, or Cherry are just $55.

Frames are also on sale.  Hot foot it to your nearest Target to take advantage of these great deals.
