Well, I guess the workable solution here may well be making bond with your boss, understand his requirement and standards, I assure you, it make your life much easier to predict what he will say or do. I recently made that mistake when designing a website for someone. I gave her five options which was about five too many. Stymied her for about a month and screwed my pay for about two.
