Don’t you just hate it when things that were preached to you as a kid turn out to be blissfully true? Things like “money doesn’t grow on trees” (by gosh, it doesn’t), “always wear clean undies,” and “a place for everything and everything in its place” seem almost golden once we’re old enough to know that we don’t quite know everything.
I always thought the stressing on organization was just a way to torment me and my billions of Barbies, Barbie shoes, and other Barbie paraphernalia. Turns out, there’s a great deal of merit to the whole approach. You not only function better when everything is tidily in its place, you stress less. Fewer misplaced papers and less time hunting for a particular pen make the day move along a calmer circuit.
A favorite website of mine (ReStockIt.com) takes a similar approach. True story. This morning, as I was rummaging through 765,854,494.3 papers for just the one I needed, my oldest daughter, Emily, was frantically getting ready for school. She was rummaging through her earring collection looking for just the pair of hoops that her top dictated. Killer top, by the way.
When we collided in the kitchen… somewhere near the coffee pot… she said, “I’ll be a few minutes late this afternoon. I’m going to stop by the store for an earring organizer. I’m not wasting 5 minutes like that again.”
The girl has zero tolerance for anything that gets her off of her set path. I like that! With coffee in her hand and a purpose in her mind, she went off on her way. With coffee in my hand a Faith Hill song on my mind I returned to my papers. All 765,854,494.3 of them. Emily, her dad (aka the hubby), and I are alike in many ways – for example, we generally each have coffee in our vicinity, we love UK basketball and St. Louis baseball, and we have a strong respect for catfish and hush puppies. However, we do differ in a few ways. He likes the Giants, she likes the Packers, and I (the brains of the operation) love the Broncos.
Another way we differ is their approach to organization. They’re for it.

I was introduced to a new web site this evening and I couldn’t wait to tell you about it. The name is See Jane Work and the merch is as clever as the name. I’m sure you couldn’t tell by the name, but the site is geared toward women in the workplace.
