Staplers, to office freaks, are like peace signs to hippies. They bring a certain type of meaning to our universe and identity to our soul. We see a stapler on our desk and we know we’re grown-ups now. Yeah. That’s right. I have my own stapler. I have arrived.
The beautiful Swingline(R) Ready Grip Staplers
, above, are straight-up gorgeous. They’re from the mecca for Office Freaks, Office Depot, and I think I must have one in every color.
Description from The Mecca’s site (OfficeDepot.com):
The Ready Grip stapler delivers exceptional comfort and control. Soft-touch material makes for added comfort, and the durable half-strip mechanism offers long life. Contemporary form fits the hand perfectly. Compact, upright design gives go-anywhere convenience. Features low staple indicator. Staples 2 to 20 sheets of 20 lb paper.
I’m also pretty sweet on the Stanley(R) Bostitch Electric Desktop Stapler, Black
shown below.

You have to admit, he’s a hottie in his own right.

* Impulse Drive™ technology allows for quick, efficient stapling.
* Super-sensitive optical trip fire mechanism.
* Staples up to 20 sheets with rapid cycles.
* Backed by the manufacturer’s 7-year limited warranty.

Many companies – online and off – are in full Back to School savings mode. Any office freak worth their weight in paper clips knows that means one thing: It’s Christmas in July! If you’re anything like me, you find yourself hovered around the season’s new notebooks, pens, binders (my pulse is starting to race), paper clips, index cards, post it notes – right there with the kiddies.
Remember the scene from Andy Griffith where Andy’s telling Opie and his friends about the Minute Men – trying to turn them on to history? Andy’s encouraging them to start a history club. Barney’s standing right behind the boys, hanging on every word. When he can’t stand it any more, he blurts out, “Will you help us?!?!”
I was perusing the seasons new binders yesterday at Target, amongst about 5 giggling little girls – and the scene above played out in my head. I didn’t let it deter me, though. I had my eye on a killer purple binder and had no intention of letting one of the gigglers get to it before me.
Yay, me.
Below are a few office supply bargains I’ve rounded up. Sure, some might call them Back to School sales – but we know what they are: Signs that God loves office freaks.

Another favorite online and offline destination is Macy’s. Be sure to check out K-Mart’s electronic deals. They’re offering 30 days free shipping which we all know adds up to really big savings.
I’ll post more Back to School sales Office Freaks deals later. Right now I have to get supper, then get all flossy flossy for Office Depot.

I can’t even tell you how attractive the Foot Machine
above looks to my feet, legs, knees, and lower back.
Suffice to say they’re all gathering for a chorus of ooooooohs and ahhhhhhhhhhs. My arms have no idea what’s going on – they just wish they were in on the good time.
If you sit at your desk anywhere near as much as I do mine, you know what I mean when I say that the back, legs, and feet can often get stiff and achy. My biggest problem is my lower back and I’m pretty sure I have a car wreck (years ago) to at least partly thank for that.
Whether I’m working online or watching television, I’ve noticed that my lower back is much more comfortable if my feet are at least a little elevated – I guess it takes some of the pressure off of my back.
My solution, when at my desk, is to sit on my legs or sit with them folded up. Bad habit. One that only worsens the circulation and causes more stiffness.
The Foot Machine
looks like it is an ideal solution for easing lower back pain at the desk. It looks like just the thing to make knees feel better too, to say nothing of the feet!
Product Description
The Foot Machine by Humanscale, with its ball bearing roller design, encourages gentle rocking of the feet in the same way a rocking chair encourages motion. Performing as a standard footrest, it provides support for the legs and relieves pressure on the lower back.
See Foot Machine
for more information. Your back, legs, and feet will thank you for it. They may even serenade you – which is, frankly, kind of cool.

One of my uncles collects model ships. It was a hobby he began when he was a teenager – even before he joined the Navy. The Navy became his life’s mission and he kept reenlisting until they accepted the fact that they’d have him and his model ships around for three or four forevers.
When I was a tiny little office freak, I loved to watch him assemble these model ships. Partly because it was fascinating and partly because his mother (my grandmother) frequently brought us fudge. If chocolate is on the scene, count on me being nearby.
The gorgeous model ships below are from New York Times Online Store and would instantly turn any office (or room) into a very cool place to be.
Especially if fudge were also in the vicinity. I’m just saying…

My closest co-worker is a total sweetheart. She’s less than two foot tall, doesn’t shave, always sleeps on my desk in front of me, and her breath smells like tuna. We get on famously, so I really have no experience with office warfare or with the desire to ambush someone by the water cooler.
However, if you are more in touch with those feelings than you even care to admit, I have a post you’re going to love. It’s A LOT of fun and will give you some pretty remarkable ideas.
See The Office Arms Race, soldier, and go get ‘em.
Hmmmm. You know, a few of the ideas in this particular post are kind of inspiring me. See, I have a score to settle with my dentist… Mr. “This won’t hurt much..” – The last words I remember hearing right before my face was pulled off of my skull. I’m just not sure if I’ll set up a USB Missile Rocket Launcher beneath his desk or go at him head on with a Nerf N Strike Raider Rapid Fire CS-35 Blaster.
Hehehe… ouch… heheh… ouch….

Below is a guest post by Kevin Baker. Enjoy!
Ah, the holidays. That wonderful time of year when families gather ‘round the fireplace to drink a little eggnog, trim the tree, and experience the joy of being together.
For most of us, the holidays are also a very hectic time of year. Especially the 12 days leading up to Christmas. And that’s true even if you don’t happen to celebrate Christmas, because it still sets a very short deadline for getting business done since most of the business world seems to come to a stop from December 25 until around January 3.
How do you reconcile the high-pressure needs of your small business with your family’s desire to roast chestnuts on the open fire? Having a virtual phone service can help. Toward that end, we offer up these 12 small business phone tips ‘til Christmas. Hope they help make your season a little brighter.
1. Pre-record a message and make it an option on your phone system’s virtual receptionist. It’s great for businesses with a small staff and different hours during the holidays.
2. Use an extension to tie to ads and/or direct mail/email promotions. Encourage customers to call a specific extension you set up to promote the door buster of the day.
3. Give Santa an extension. Let kids call to listen to Santa directly at the North Pole. This will work even better if you have an 800 number through your virtual phone service provider.
4. Instead of having personnel on the phone when they could be helping live customers, set up your phone system to post updates on current inventory levels of hot items. Add the date and time so customers know how current the information is.
5. Create an FAQ recording with answers to common questions for customers. Just remember to leave them a way to opt out and talk to someone live if they want.
6. Customers often gather information on the Web then use other means to make the purchase. Make it easy for them to call by adding a Web call button (a “Call Now” type button) to your Web site.
7. Make a quick business call while you pick out a Christmas tree. With virtual phone services for small business, customers will see your caller ID and will likely assume you’re calling from the office.
8. Instead of missing out on holiday parties you can step aside with your peppermint hot chocolate in hand and finish-up last minute business with the your phone’s conference call feature.
9. Don’t stay behind waiting to receive a fax in your home office while your family heads out to the in-laws for a pre-holiday feast. Treat your virtual phone service as a fax delivery the same as you do with your voicemail messages, and receive your faxes via email on your cell phone or laptop. Never wait around for a fax again!
10. Use smart call forwarding to offer 24×7 customer support. Smart call forwarding connects to any phone you choose. Have each person on staff take a night to provide that support during the holidays – then advertise it’s available.
11. Use smart call forwarding to carve out a little time for yourself. With smart call forwarding you can sneak out to do a little extended shopping, trim the tree with the family, or a holiday lunch without losing touch.
12. Make your holiday bright. Not a phone tip just good advice. Take the time to relax, enjoy and refresh yourself for 2010. Happy holidays!
