Robot Bunnies Shade

I love anything that allows you to express yourself – whether it’s jewelry, hats, or office decor.  I’m all about putting your personal stamp on anything and everything.  You know, this is me – take it or leave it.

Because I do love that whole individualistic approach, I’m all kinds of wild about Lamp-in-a-box.com. So brilliant. So cool. So original.

Cartoon Chase Shade

Lamp-in-a-box.com features their own crazy cool shades in various designs – trust me, they’re designs that’ll be unlike any you’ve ever seen.  I’ve thrown a few around this post to give you an idea.  However, what may even be more amazing is this:  You can use your own pictures to create lamp shades that are definitely one of a kind and personal. Can you imagine, your cat, your spouse, and/or your children gracing a lamp in your office?  The people who light up your world lighting up your office as well.

That was a little deep just then…. and on a Monday. Oooooooh.

You’ll want to jump over to Lamp-in-a-box.com and have a look around. You’ll be pretty impressed. I think my favorite is the Robot Bunnies Shade. What’s not to love about Robo Bunnies?  But the cartoon Beatles being chased by girls (the ladies are on the other side) is a whimsical de-light, too.   Sorry.

TurboTax Home and Business Federal and State with efile

I recently had one of those Ah Ha! moments in life. If I’d been a cartoon, a light bulb would have gone off over my head.  Chalk it up to a new year, new goals, reflections, self examination and all of that good stuff.  I was driving along, chugging my Iced Green Tea from Panera Bread (can you say addiction?) and wondering why I didn’t seem to have the same zest and passion for a lot of my online projects, websites, and blogs that I once did.

I mean, I take pride in my sites and in our online web publishing business and I couldn’t love what I do any more than I do.  However, I don’t jump out of the bed quite as excitedly as I used  to.  I also tend to get distracted much easier than before.  I’ve simply noticed a shift in my attitude the past few months – not a huge shift, mind you, but a shift nonetheless.  So I wanted to get to the bottom of it and the sooner the better.

As one part of my brain was lying out the situation, another part offered up the answer with one word:  Overwhelmed.  The part of the brain that was busy dishing out the facts wasn’t so sure…. I work from home for crying out loud, it said… how can I be overwhelmed when I set my own terms, goals, deadlines, and hours?  Nah, I wasn’t buying that.

But, as I drove along, the same word kept playing again and again in my brain.  So, being a blogger, I laid out all of my must-dos and wana-dos in bullet points fashion:

  • get fit – I want to devote time to achieving the best health and fitness I possibly can
  • I want to expand my self help blog/website and add more articles
  • I want to re-do my entire mental fitness/brain fitness website and blog
  • I need to add a lot more pictures to my Kentucky site and I want to add a lot of slideshows
  • I wanted to re-do 3 other websites and 2 other blogs
  • I want to redecorate the living room
  • As soon as spring arrives, my husband and I have a lot of landscaping and gardening plans that I’m completely excited about
  • I have lots of goals for my recipe blog
  • I had 14 blogs that I wanted to keep updated, if not daily – every other day
  • I had relaunched a site that would take a lot of work to get back on its feet
  • I need to do more article writing and marketing
  • Social media – I need to become more involved

Then, add to the list the fact that I am an avid cook who is happiest when she’s in the kitchen cooking for at least an hour each day.  Less than that and I feel cheated.  Also, if it’s college basketball or baseball season – in the evening, my cat Alexa and I want to be right where the action is… in front of the television with snacks nearby.

After a brief inventory, I went with “overwhelmed.”  I envisioned a plate that was packed so full – with so much food piled onto it – that it was atrocious rather than inviting.  I knew some things needed to go and, as is usually the case, I didn’t have any problem pinpointing the ones that were more trouble than they were worth – the things that didn’t offer me enough of a reward or satisfaction to make them worthwhile.

By the time the amazing green tea was gone (and my straw was making its sssswwwwwwwrrrr, there isn’t any left, woman plea) I had mentally shortened my self-imposed obligations and saw light at the end of the tunnel.  What’s more I actually saw the plate.  The plate, to me, represents life and, more importantly, getting all of the enjoyment from it that you can.  When we heap too many expectations onto the plate – and onto life – we don’t have time to really approach life as it was meant to be approached.

Instantly, I mean instantly, I felt better.  I was able to lay out a workable daily schedule – one that allowed life to be beautiful, not just busy.

If you’re feeling a little less inspired or motivated than normal, take a good, honest look at your life.  Don’t just ask yourself what you NEED, ask yourself what you WANT.  What makes you happy?  What makes you feel relaxed?  What gives you the greatest joy?  Are you allowing yourself enough time for these things?

By the same token, you may be one of the few people carrying a plate that’s too empty.  Instead of biting off too much, you’ve been guilty of having lips so tight a straw couldn’t squeeze through them!  Maybe you’re at the point where you want more from life and more from yourself.  If that’s the case, fill your plate wisely.  Choose things that you are truly passionate about – the sort of things you could, literally, talk about for hours without taking a breath.  These are the things that will almost always seem like play even when they’re work.

If you need to add to your plate, go for it… just be smart about it.

If you need to clean off some of your plate, get busy. I highly, highly, highly recommend it.  And, with that said, I am now off to look at some miniature tomatoes, a hummingbird garden, and a shade garden that my husband showed me online last night.

I always like the unexpected, and this art print is definitely unexpected… and fun.   Fun’s always a welcome guest in any office.    Charlie Chaplin would make an excellent office companion – he doesn’t pop his gum, won’t steal your candy, and won’t snitch on you if you leave a few minutes early.

Dimensions:

  • Print Size is 36 x 18 in.
  • Image Size 34.5 x 16.5 in.
  • Frame Size 44.25 x 26.25in.

Vintage Hollywood designs are always in style and give a room personality as well as an air of class.  Click through the link for more art prints, but I’m not sure you’ll do any better than Charlie.  He’s the bee’s knees.

Business Cards

I love Business Cards so much you’d think I invented the idea. They’re brilliant! Business cards are perfect for spreading your name around town, keeping it in front of potential customers, and (most importantly) for making a great first impression. If someone has business cards printed up – and they look chic – you know they’re serious about what they do. They’re in it to win it!

With VistaPrint, you can design and customize your own business cards with your very own logo or photo, or you can choose from a really wide array of templates tailored to your industry or niche. What’s more, if you’re searching for a sleek, professional look, you can customize your business cards by selecting a matte or glossy finish, foil-accents and more. Get an electronic business card as well, and jazz up your email signature. These are verrrry impressive.

Like all VistaPrint products, you can create your business cards in minutes and receive them in as few as 3 days.

VistaPrint also has postcards, sticky notes, letterheads, presentation folders, mouse pads, hats, window decals, lawn signs, photo cards, note cards, return address labels, stamps, announcements, invitations, t-shirts (yes, t-shirts), and more. So, if you’re looking to get personal, you can get everything you need in one place – all with the same logo and design and all delivered to you in a matter of days.

Start with Business Cards and simply build from there.   New year… time to buckle down and get completely serious!

Below is a guest post by Kevin Baker and it really gives us all a lot to think about. As you read through the article, hold yourself accountable in each area – whether you have your own small business or are part of a larger business. Bloggers, web designers, graphic artists, affiliate marketers, and web publishers can also use the advice to become better at what we do. Generally speaking, becoming better means earning better, right?

So let’s not waste another second!

Oz Was No Wizard at Customer Service
By Kevin Baker

In The Wizard of Oz, the title character is beloved and revered by all the people in that magical land over the rainbow. Yet when you look at it from a small business/customer service perspective it’s really hard to understand why.

In fact, the Great and Powerful Oz is probably one of the best examples of what not to do if you want to grow your business. Let’s take a look at some of his mistakes, and see how an alternative strategy might suit your business better.

  • Be difficult to reach. In order to seek an audience with the Wizard, Dorothy and her friends must first navigate a strange and unfamiliar landscape with confusing twists and turns. It’s a little more difficult than the simple advice to follow the yellow brick road. How tough are you to reach? Is your contact information (phone number and/or email) clearly spelled out on your Web site, or do you hide behind a contact form? Customers and prospects don’t like filling out forms. They want to speak to a real person. Make it easy for them. Actually publish your phone and email information in the ‘Contact Us” section. Even better, add a “Call us” button on the site that automatically makes the call for the customer.
  • Hide behind a gatekeeper. When Dorothy and friends finally get to Oz, they think they’re going to make an appointment and see the Wizard. Instead, the gatekeeper says Oz never sees anyone. When customers or prospects call your business, can they get through to the person they’re calling? You want to make sure your phone system makes it easy to get to the right person. A virtual phone system helps with that, because its virtual receptionist can direct callers to the right extension – even if they’re not sure what that extension is. It also provides options to forward office phones to home, mobile or other phones, making you and your employees reachable even when you’re out of the office.
  • Work in an ivory tower. Or in this case in Emerald City. The Wizard only knows his own perspective because he never sees or talks to the regular people. He thinks it makes him mysterious, which is true. But it also means he has difficulty relating to the people who need his help. It’s important to maintain regular contact with customers, prospects, business partners and others so you can seek out their perspectives and points of view, and understand better what motivates them so you can deliver what they want.
  • Go back on your word. The Wizard tells Dorothy if she and her friends want him to grant their requests, they must first bring back the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West – a daunting task. When they return after fulfilling their end of the bargain, though, the Wizard starts to backtrack because he knows he can’t actually do what he promised. As a small business you have to know what your capabilities are, then A) be sure not to promise things you can’t deliver, and B) deliver on the things you do promise.

All that being said, the one thing the Wizard got right was creating that larger than life image. Today, small businesses have the opportunity to make themselves look larger and more professional by using tools and technologies that provide the same capabilities as those enjoyed by large enterprises.

Oz may have been great and powerful, but when it came to customer service he left a lot to be desired. Learn from his mistakes and you’ll have more happy customers saying there’s no place like your company.
