As Tall as You Want to Be

by Joi on April 30, 2006

I subscribe to a lot of e-zines. Possibly….nah, probably….too many. Honestly, for every 1 that comes through that I’m glad I read, there are about 4 that I know were a waste of time. It’s Sunday, so I’m being generous with my numbers - it’s actually more catawampus than that.

However, when that magical, lonely 1 does hit the Inbox, I feel justified. Below is the most recent lone wolf. It’s by Denis Waitley, and his e-zines are always good. Very good. I’ve never read anything he’s written and thought, “What a fat waste of time that was.”

Granted, the story hasn’t a thing in the world to do with Office Supplies. But it does have to do with humans, and every office in the world has at least one of those. Hopefully.

I hope you catch some of the inspiration I caught from the story.

As Tall as You Want to Be by Dr. Denis Waitley

When he was two years old, this adopted child of two college professors suddenly and inexplicably stopped growing, and his health started to fail. A team of doctors gave him six months to live after they diagnosed him as suffering from a rare disease that inhibits digestion and nutrients in food. Intravenous feedings of vitamins and supplements allowed him to regain his strength, but his growth was permanently stunted.

Confined to hospitals for long periods of time, until the age of nine, he quietly plotted his revenge on the kids who taunted him and called him “peanut.”

He recalled many years later that subconsciously “the whole experience made me want to succeed at something athletic.” Sometimes his sister, Susan, went ice skating at the local rink, and he would go along to watch. There he stood, a frail, undergrown kid, with a feeding tube inserted through his nose and down into his stomach. When he wasn’t using it, one end of the tube was taped behind his ear.

One day, as he watched his sister whirl around the ice, he turned to his parents and said, “You know, I think I’d like to try ice skating.” Talk about two adults, looking at their life-threatened child, with glances that were beyond belief!

Well, he tried it and he loved it, and he went at it with a passion. Here was something fun at which he could excel, where height and weight weren’t important.

During his medical checkup the following year, the doctors were startled to discover that he had actually started growing again. It was too late for him to reach normal size, but neither he nor his family cared. He was recovering and succeeding. He believed in his dream, although he had little else to hang on to.

None of the kids taunt him and tease him today. Instead, they all cheer and rush to get his autograph. He has just completed another dazzling performance on the world professional ice skating tour, with a long string of triple jumps, complicated maneuvers, and athletic moves, capped off with a racing front flip that brought him to a sudden stop inches from the audience. Although he has retired from professional skating, he remains a coach, mentor and commentator revered by everyone in winter sports.

At five feet three inches and 115 pounds of pure muscle and electrifying energy, former Olympic gold medal figure skating champion, Scott Hamilton stands as tall and as proud as any winner. Scott’s size didn’t limit his faith and reach. Don’t let doubts and critics limit yours. This doesn’t mean that you’ll close almost every sale or get promoted in record time. Scott Hamilton certainly didn’t hit every triple-axle jump he ever attempted, especially during the initial learning phase. Success in developing any skill requires a basic trust in your ability that should never be allowed to waver.

You can stand tall, no matter how small!
– Denis Waitley

Talk about self growth!

Scoptic Desk Lamp

by Joi on April 26, 2006

Scoptic Desk Lamp

Have you and your inner shopper ever visited Collegiate Mall.com? Frankly until a few days ago, I’d never even heard of the site. My inner shopper, who I thought was all over anything with the word Mall in its title, hadn’t even heard of it.

Collegiate Mall has desks, chairs, futons, tables, and file cabinets for your office - at home or away. They also have beds, dressers, nightstands, bar stools, appliances and a bistro table that I’m searching high and low for a place for……ummm, as well as a reason for.

They also have some pretty hot lamps, like the one shown above.

The
Scopic Desk Lamp

has a totally innovative design that’ll add style and attitude to any room it lights up. Telescoping reach adjusts from 14″ - 23″ to conveniently illuminate whatever it is you’re working on, or trying to work on…..

…..even if it’s a justification for $250.00 bistro table.

Desktop Dodgeball

Desktop Dodgeball

I admit I’m a bit screwy. Okay, I own screwy. Maybe that explains why I loves this little dodgeball game.

You line the little brats….er, darlings…..up, then you take their legs out from under them by hurling the little sponge ball at them. Co-worker tap dancing on your last nerve? Name one after him and, yeah, you get it. NO, HE GETS IT!

This delightful little game is available at www.UncommonGoods.com and costs all of $16.00. You’ll find them waiting for you when you use the pull down menu under desktop and click on office gadgets.

I’m not sure who I’d go for first - the one in overalls or the one with his tongue flapping. I think the latter’s asking for it the most. I kind of like the dentally magnificent one in green - I’d prop her somewhere safe and let her just watch. She’d be me, but I’d color over the green with a hot pink. Then I’d….

I’ve hit an all new low. Now I’m role-playing with wooden little figurines. And enjoying it.

The Aeron Lumbar-Friendly Desk Chair

by Joi on April 23, 2006

Aeron Lumbar Chair My back and I have been wildly researching desk chairs. A name that keeps coming up is the Aeron Desk Chair. Apparently it gives support where you need it the most. Kind of like a Wonder Bra.

Or not.

The Aeron chair, by Herman Miller, is said to be the best ergonomic chair you can buy. I’ve read lots of raving reviews about the chair - but, the price is kind of high, at $899, so I’m searching for more reviews and more raves. After all, $899 could finance around 225 trips to Starbucks. That’s how I budget money - by the cup. (Husband, speaketh not.)

FEATURES:

  • Pellicle fabric suspension distributes weight evenly over the seat and back.
  • Chair conforms to the sitter and minimizes back pressure.
  • Open fabric breathes with the body.
  • Kinemat tilt allows natural and effortless movement.
  • Posture support.

If you’d like to read up on the chair that has caught my back’s attention, if not my purse’s, you can do so by clicking through on one of the following links:

See you at Starbucks!

Giving Corporate Life the Kiss Off

by Joi on April 19, 2006

While eatting Taco Pizza and mentally gearing up for tonight’s AI (chews nails nervously), I was reading over a few of my favorite blogs. One in particular had a post I thought you’d find interesting. Pearsonified: Best Damn Blog on the Planet is the blog. Chris Pearson is the blogger. When I first saw the blog and read its tagline I knew it and I would be seeing a lot of each other.

Here’s a little teaser of a recent great post: How to: Kiss Corporate Life Goodbye

” The guy you call “boss,” who incidentally wears a monkey suit every day to work, says that this year, you’re worth a 5% raise. Who the hell is he, anyway? Who is anyone, for that matter, to tell you what you’re worth? This seems like a ridiculous concept to me. Each day, you go out and determine how much you’re worth. You determine it by producing, by learning, and by creating more value in your life and your work. “

Gosh I like the way this guy’s mind works. Everything he says is dead on and the way he says it makes it a fun ride.

Click HERE to read the post in its entirety. And while on the blog, be sure you check out the “Recent Letter to Someone I Should Have Beaten to a Pulp” post. The antagonist of the post is one of those people who make you wish it weren’t illegal to give a comeuppance to someone whose uppance has come.

Taco Pizza. Check. Blogroll. Check. Link love. Check. Scared spitless for Ace Young and Kellie Pickler. Check. Check.

Great Deals on Electronics and Furniture at Overstock.com

by Joi on April 16, 2006

Overstock.com's Electronic Blowout!

I’m in the thick of studying and pricing laptops. I have been for a while now, but I’ve stepped up my game lately.

We have three computers in our house - and each one is in a room where the light can be seen from our bedroom. Usually not a problem, but our oldest daughter, who is in school and has a job - has essentially one time of day to study or work online. From about 11:00 pm to whenever she’s through - which can be anywhere between 1:00 am and 4:00 am. Last night she was up to about 2:00 am working on a paper and IM-ing with two friends - one who lives in New York and one in California. With Emily here in Kentucky, these girls had the country covered.

Unfortunately, I’m one of those people who wants everything to be as dark as midnight when going to sleep. And even with our door closed, just enough light comes through to bug me and my picky sleeping habits. But if we had a laptop for Em to take into her bedroom, she could LOL, BRB, RLBF, and OMG all night and mom could ZZZ.

A laptop would also come in handy when there’s someone at each computer and a bolt of inspiration hits me. Hey, it happens! Okay, once it happened.

Overstock.com is having a HUGE BLOWOUT on Electronics with savings up to 70%!! They seem hellbent on saving us hundreds of dollars. They’d do the same for you, of course. Which is why I’m letting you in on the blowout.

Give them a good look - and while there, you oughta check out their furniture. They have some Asian pieces that are nothing short of gorgeous. Best of all, they’re also marked way down. I loves Asian decor, it makes me almost as happy as Asian food. Almost.

A Couple of Links to Take the Bite out of Work

by Joi on April 14, 2006

Below are a few really good links you might want to check out:

Michele Marrinan (love that name) of Monster.com has written a dead-on article about working with difficult people. It’s titled Thriving in a Difficult Work Environment and it just may have a solution or two to make your workday easier.

Allan Hoffman’s article, Simplify Your Work Life: Lessons from Life Hacks, is all about taking the chaos out of life. That’s an idea who’s time has most definitely come.

Have a glorious Easter weekend!

Google launches Google Calendar

by Chrispian on April 13, 2006

I don’t know about you, but I use several computers daily. Between work, home and my laptop I get very, very tired of trying to sync up all my data. Contacts, email, notes, to-do lists, and my calendar. I used Google for a lot of my projects, especially email where I can keep up with my contacts on the go. No matter where I am I have access to everyone I need to be in touch with.

One tool I’ve been waiting on Google to introduce is a calendar. I live by my calendar and daily reminders. I couldn’t get the things done that I need to without it. I have my trusty “paper” calendar, I use my Mac’s iCal program and I also use Yahoo’s online calendar. That is, until now. Google Calendar is finally here and so far it’s it’s pretty sweet. You can import from outlook or ical to get setup quickly. You can setup alerts and even get them sent to your phone (still waiting on my confirmation code), setup multiple calendars and even share them. Along with the other online tools I use this will round out my “must have” list making me that much less dependent ant on being tied to one computer.

Isn’t freedom cool!
