The Follow Through

by Joi on December 31, 2005

Office Chest Organizer!

I recently read a book that started off with a bang, then quickly lost its momentum. Midway through the first chapter I was telling everyone I knew, “This is incredible….you have to read this book!” Midway through the second chapter it became, “Well, you don’t have to.” By the third chapter??? “Do I have to finish this thing?”

It’s New Year’s Eve and I have punch to make, a cake to bake and a movie to see - so my brain’s too strained to go too far into the deep end with this one, but I will say that more times than not, I’ve been as guilty as this cursed book. (Hopefully not as boring!) But in regards to New Year’s Resolutions, I’ve most definitely started off smoking in January (Chapter 1), cooled off by February (Chapter 2), then fizzled right out by March (Chapter 3). Then by the time December came around (Chapter 13), my resolve nowhere resembled the one I started off with.

This year I’m holding myself more accountable. No more writing the resolutions down then losing the paper…Hopefully I’ll outsmart myself this year by keeping the goals written down in plain sight. Then, I can do a “check up” of sorts weekly, see how things are coming, or not coming. This way, if I’m motoring along in the wrong direction, I can put the pedal to the metal, cut the fish tail and take off in another direction. No speeding tickets given on the road to self improvement!

The
3 Drawer Office Chest by Iris - (on Clearance for just $39.99!)

could be just the sort of thing to help those of us seeking more organization in our lives.

From the manufacturer:

Features two small drawers for storing and organizing your office supplies, and a large bottom drawer that holds hanging files. Includes a sturdy laminated wood top that holds up to 150 pounds and wheels for added mobility.

Essentially, it’s a file cabinet/extra drawer space/lamp table dream come true. Works for me.

I will give the author of the ill-fated book this, that first chapter was great. In fact, the title alone - A New Practice for a New Reality - gave me new-found determination and resolve. There’s a great deal of wisdom in that title. I’ll leave you alone with it to see what it does for you.

Have a mind-boggling fun New Year’s Eve. If there’s music, dance. If there’s food, eat. If there’s fun to be had, take it all!

Want A More Productive Workspace ?

by Mike on December 30, 2005

How many times have you complained about how your workspace feels, looks or lives ?

Me ? About a hundred times. We will be adding more LARGE shelves in the first couple of weeks of the new year. As soon as I catch my breath from finishing 2005.

Steve Pavlina Banner

I read Steve Pavlina’s blog on a regular basis. This may be my favorite post of all time from there.

Here’s a few of the subheads. I’m trying to get you to click thru and read the whole post. It would also help if you took ACTION on what you read. Reading never changed anyone’s life. Only taking ACTION on what you read will create change.

How does your workspace make you feel ?

What if you don’t like how you feel ?

Imagine your ideal space.

Alter your space.

Commanding position.

If you don’t like it, change it.

If that’s not enough of an enticement to get you to click thru, here’s a little neuro-linguistic programming……

Click the link….click the link……click the link………click the link……..

Oh yeah, here’s THE LINK !

Tumi Laptop Carrier

Tumi luggage and laptop carriers have a stellar reputation for quality. According to the company’s mission statement, they strive to “…create bags that are true extensions of the human form. Each piece taking a step toward the goal of simple perfection. Consciously designed and detailed to achieve effortless navigation through our world. Constantly evolving and growing to increase your potential.”

Personally? I just think they look hot.

The Tumi Laptop Carriers pictured here are from the Luggage Collections at Macy’s.com.

They’re available in basic Black as well as Beet, Fir and Yam….which on unpretentious days go by Red, Green and Orange.

The Discovery USB Beverage Warmer…Now That’s A Hot Peripheral!

by Cary on December 29, 2005

Discovery USB Beverage WarmerThe winter rain has really set in here in so-called “sunny” California (hate to burst your bubble, but it ain’t all movie stars and palm trees out here!) and I’ve just stumbled upon what must be the most creative use of your computer’s USB port yet…it’s a USB powered cup warmer!

Yep, forget about those constant trips to the office microwave – now you can keep your coffee (or green tea in my case) hot, hot, hot, right at your desk.

What’s there to know about this amazing gadget? Not much – it apparently fits most standard mugs, works with any USB port, doesn’t require any batteries (that’s what the USB is for, silly!,) and it comes with the all-important 1-year manufacturer’s warranty. Oh, and it looks like it’s set to start shipping at the end of January 2006...just a few weeks away.

6 items that will rock you and 1 that just plain sucks!

by Chrispian on December 29, 2005

David Seah has a great post of several items that are totally hot. Well, accept for the Read ‘Em version of Poker which I find offensive as a hard core poker player! But the Scooter Laptop Stand rocks. Much better than the one I posted earlier and it is from Herman Miller who you know I already love. The Inka Pen pen is pretty sweet as well. I’ll have to give it a try, though as a Fisher Space Pen fan it just doesn’t have the appeal that my trusty FSP’s do! Another great item is the Carousel Book Shelf/Stand which I’m probably going to snag a couple. I have a stack of books I use on a regular basis and it would be nice to have them in such easy reach. My favorite, of course, is the 3×5 Card Bleacher, which just totally hits me where I live. I use 3×5 cards like other people breath air. The Card Bleacher is exactly the kind of thing I’ve been looking for to take my 3×5 card usage to the next level. Check out David Seah’s Levenger: Tools for Serious Readers post for links to the products. Great post David, I’m sooooo jealous.

Magnetic Appeal Bulletin Board

by Joi on December 28, 2005

Magnetic Appeal Bulletin Board

My beloved crazy mad sexy cyber hangout, www.UncommonGoods.com has done it again - they’ve come up with something else I simply must have.

I’ve been looking at bulletin boards for a while - trying to find something kind of edgy and different. But just how much of an edge can you expect from cork?! Then, of course there’s the problem with the little rainbow-colored tacks. I always manage to lose them only to find them while stumbling through the house barefoot…..amazing how many things bare feet can find, isn’t it?

I already have a wall picked out for this bulletin board and its magnetic personality. I’m just wondering if, you know, the stuff on the other walls are worthy of its presence. Hmmmm, I might need to pay another visit to Quirky Nation to see what else they have.

Dirty job but somebody’s gotta do it.

When All’s NOT Well in the Office

by Joi on December 26, 2005

It’s that time of year again - time for the sniffles, the coughs, the snorts, the hacks, etc. (The etc. can darned near kill you.)

I can only imagine what life around an office can be like during the cold and flu season. Given the fact that the average sick person goes on to work, germs in hand….literally…. any given office can be a germy perdition. One can’t even rely upon the cleaning crew. According to microbiologists, viruses can live for up to three days on phones, water coolers levers, and elevator buttons.

A recent article in Psychology Today gave the following tips for keeping your health when those around you are losing theirs:

  • Keep your desk organized and clean. Wipe all surfaces at least once a week with a disinfectant.
  • Wash your hands frequently. People who work at their desk touch their face a lot, and when you consider that viruses enter the body through the head’s gateways (the eyes, the ears, the mouth, the nose), you realize why you should wash your hands well a few times throughout the work day. Keep a small bottle of gel sanitizer in a drawer if you don’t fancy the trek to the bathroom.
  • Carry tissues. Keeping tissues handy will stop most airborne viruses.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Stress weakens your immune system. A recent study found that when flu shots are given to sleep-deprived volunteers, the effect takes weeks to kick in - leaving them vulnerable in the meantime.
  • Keep in mind that people with the flu or a cold become contagious a day before they show any symptoms - and remain contagious after the symptoms have disappeared.

Stay well!
