Toshiba Satellite R15-S829 Notebook PC

by Joi on November 30, 2005

Toshiba Satellite R15-S829 Notebook PC Let me get this straight, with this ingenius notebook computer, the Toshiba Satellite R15-S829 Notebook PC, I could take notes and answer e-mail without a Keyboard?

If I’m to believe the manufacturer’s copywriter (and he or she would have no reason to lie to me), the user can use a pen with hyper-precise digital ink to take notes. No Keyboard. The artistically inclined, of whom I am not numbered amongst, could even take a line or two for a walk and wax all kinds of creative. That’s cool.

Here’s more info from said copywriter:

It Slices, It Dices – It’s The Swiss Army Pen!

by Cary on November 30, 2005

Swiss Army PenLooking for the perfect gift for that gadget-hound on your Christmas list? Believe it or not, there’s a Swiss Army Pen, and it’s fashioned after a GPS Swiss Army rifle cartridge…too cool!

This crazy contraption sports an authentic Swiss Army multi-tool from Victorinox, a flashlight with batteries that last for over 12-hours of continual use, a letter opener, nail file and scissors.

Coolest of all (Chrispian’s gonna’ like this,) the Swiss Army Pen uses an ink cartridge manufactured by Fisher Space Pen, so it can write underwater, at any angle (even upside down) and in hot and cold temperature conditions (great for taking that hot snow-bunny’s digits, eh?)

To top it off, the Swiss Army Pen comes with a 2-year warranty…just in case it peters out on your next deep-sea mission ;)

Cool bags for guys!

by Chrispian on November 29, 2005

Where are all the cool bags for guys? I freely admit I love a good bag. I have so many bags I don’t use that even my wife looks at me funny – and she loves bags too! I want a bag that looks cool and functions the way I need it to. We seem to be stuck with either book bags or laptop bags, most of which have no style and they layout is not only boring, but just doesn’t work like it needs to.

Backpacks tend to be on the extremely large side. I use a 12” iBook and I carry a handful of other items like books, papers, checkbook, wallet etc. I don’t need a huge bag for all that. I don’t want some monster bag hanging off my back while walking through the bookstore where it becomes a danger to shelves and people in equal measure.

Sling bags and messenger bags tend to fair worse than the backpacks. Sling bags tend to be odd shaped most of the time and the bands are thin and pretty flimsy. Many of them have a lot of style, just lack in the function department. Messenger bags are a great idea, except most of them get it wrong. Don’t use Velcro. Just say no to Velcro. Don’t put zippers on the pocket where the laptop will go. You’ll make me scratch my laptop and you don’t want me to send you a bill for that. A good messenger bag should have a small pocket on the outside flap for quick access stuff like wallet or keys. The flap should have one buckle/latch type fastener and be heavy enough to stay shut without it being “closed”. Underneath the flap should be easy pockets for other smaller items followed by a bigger pocket for papers, books and laptop widgets and then finally a spot for the laptop. Many bags come close, but usually fail in at least one of the areas that are deal breakers for me, like plastic rings to hold the strap on, or a thin strap, or a wide rigid cheap one.

I’ve spend a lot of money on bags over the years and, frankly, I’ve still not found the one I love. But I’ve found a couple that made my heart skip a beat and my stomach flutter a bit. Infatuation will have to do until I find “the one”.

The Breakfast Buffet from Crumpler has a good deal of style. My main gripe about the bag is the strap, the plastic buckles and Velcro flap. The layout is as near perfect as I could want though. It’s just not as comfortable to wear as I would like, and at this price I expected the straps to be a lot more comfortable. The bag itself is as well made as they come.

Almost every bag from Booqbags makes me a bit weak in the knees. Great looking bags and some of the best made, hands down. I own a couple of bags from Booq and it’s hard to find a bag that looks as good and is also this well made. My only reservation with the bags is they tend to be small (just room for the ibook) or on the bulky side. Still, I really like these bags!

Ogio makes some very nice looking bags. A bit of a cross between the Crumpler and Booq. Lots of style and very well made. They tend to run on the larger side, which would be my main complaint about them, though they do have some of the best styles available.

The one that brought a tear to my eye is the Oakley SI Vertical Computer Bag - It’s just plain tuff ! This is my current squeeze at the moment and if I can get enough money I want to get some slick Oakly shades to go with it. They also have a tech style vest with some pockets and such, but if I bought it and wore it even Trekkies would try to beat me up. You’d have to be extremely cool to pull it off and you only see that kind of cool in movies.

If you’ve found a bag that you like I’d love to hear about it. I’m still on my quest to find the perfect bag. Something small enough that it won’t be a burden in stores and walking around but still have enough room for my things. I don’t want to have to buy a purse! Let me know what your favorite bag is!

iWork Is A Great Alternative For Any Mac-Based Office

by Cary on November 28, 2005

Apple Iwork 05 For MacOoh, I just know I’m gonna’ catch some crud for this.

If you’re a MacAddict such as myself you might take a serious look at Apple’s new iWork software package. While it’s still a rather young bit of code, iWork’s two programs — Pages (a word processor) and Keynote (presentation software) — give Microsoft’s behemoth Word and PowerPoint programs a run for their money. Seriously.

While I am sure there are some Microsoft Word power-users out there who won’t find what they need in Apple’s Pages application, I think for the vast majority of basic users (such as myself,) Pages does everything that Word can do, but quicker, easier, and with a heck of a lot more style. Unlike Word, the pre-formatted templates that are included with Pages are absolutely gorgeous, providing a great jumping-off point for business letters, invoices, newsletters etc. On top of that, being a new program the code is still unbloated, and it really shows — this thing is speedy, even on a few of my older macs!

Keynote, Apple’s new presentation application, creates stunning graphs, charts and slideshows, and can output graphic files in all the standard formats, including TIFF, JPG, PDF, PNG, QuickTime and even PowerPoint. I’ve found it to be an excellent program for visualizing my earnings, overhead, etc. As is to be expected from Apple, Keynote couldn’t be any easier to use, and the results are stunning. PowerPoint can’t begin to compare.

If you’ve been anxiously awaiting a real alternative to Word & PowerPoint for your Mac, your time has finally come…iWork absolutely shines.

Staples Holiday Chair Extravaganza

by Joi on November 28, 2005

Global Airflow Leather Mesh-Back Chair Staples is having a Holiday Chair Extravaganza!

Okay, they aren’t actually calling it an extravaganza- their plain Jane word was Event. Extravaganza was my word - and what a word, at that. I’ve a bit too much Erica Kane in my veins to settle on the word event when a a word with higher brows exists.

In any extravaganza…. Staples is having a great deal on some really fantastic office chairs. Chairs that Erica Kane, herself, would take pride in parking her hide in. The one I chose to use as the picture within this post, for example, is gorgeous, don’t you think?

Check out what makes it special:

  • The wheels are designed especially for carpet ( They recommend that you replace the casters if this chair will be used on hard flooring or a chairmat.)
  • Pneumatic seat-height adjustment
  • Height-adjustable armrests
  • Scuff-resistant molded base
  • Tilt-turn mechanism
  • Tilt lock

With it’s leather exterior and unique mesh back, it oozes class, and dare I say sex appeal!

Check it out at Staples.com or at a Staples near you. It is that easy.

Gift-Giving Guidelines for the Office

by Joi on November 27, 2005

Finally! It took me about a week, but I’ve found a really great article centered around Gift-Giving Guidelines for the Office. It’s something I couldn’t personally write about because my office lies just off of my dining room and my co-workers are my husband, daughters, and cats. We haven’t that many guidelines. So, I was on the hunt for a quality article with great content to link to.

Eureka!

Here’s the link: Gift-Giving Guidelines for the Office.

Again, my knowledge of this subject is similar to my knowledge of trigonometry (Zilch), but is the author right about not giving homemade gifts at the office? See, I’d think that would be a great idea, as long as the giver is skilled at what they’re making. Would it depend on the office, or is it really a bad idea?

How to Plan a Holiday Party for the Office

by Joi on November 25, 2005

There’s a great little timely article over at eHow.com. It’s titled How to Plan a Holiday Party for the Office. I like the one about encouraging everyone to be blunt about what they want and don’t want. Far too many people clam up when they should open up…then open up when they should clam up. Annoying human trait, that.

USB Mini Desktop Aquarium

by Mike on November 25, 2005

USB Aquarium

I don’t know what the weather’s like at your office, but mine’s gonna have temperatures around 19 degrees tonite. Not as much daylight, colder temps and no golf make me cranky, so I’m looking for anything, and I mean anything, to remind me of my former life as a beach bum in Florida.

I’ve found several gadgets that I’m gonna share with you over the next few days, but I’m starting with this USB powered mini desktop aquarium. I found it at Think Geek and am in the middle of a fish crush as we speak.

It’s got these great features :

-Works with any computer or gaming console with a USB port

-Swimming fish with hinged tails and life-like motion

-Blue LED can be used to light-up the aquarium or for night operation

-Separate On/off switches for the LED nightlight and water current

-Can also run on batteries (4 AA, not included)

-Comes with: aquarium tank, USB cable, 2 fish

-Just add water, connect to USB and enjoy!

-Dimensions: 3.75″ wide x 3.5″ high x 2.5″ deep

Drop by Think Geek and check out all the gadgets. I’m sure you can find a few things that will help you get thru this winter, brighten the mood around your office and help you get rid of all those Visa/Mastercard gift cards you get this Christmas.

Happy Thanksgiving!

by Joi on November 24, 2005

“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures”. ~Thornton Wilder

We’d all like to wish you and your loved ones an absolutely beautiful Thanksgiving Day. May your food be filling, your travels safe, and your family on their best behavior.

Shove your worries and cares under the table for the day and look around at everything and everyone you have to be thankful for. If there’s someone sitting across the table from you with love in their eyes, you have it all!

Embrace each and every moment. They are, after all what memories are made of.
